ScotGrid

16 November 2007: GU ScotGrid's new cluster delivers 2.5 million CPU hours in its first year.

16th November marks one year of full GU ScotGrid production with our new cluster. In that time more than 2.5 million CPU hours have been delivered to user communities in the University and across the EGEE grid. Almost 500,000 jobs have been processed for nearly 500 users.

As the new cluster is so much faster then the old ScotGrid, we've actually delivered more computing resource in one year than the old cluster managed in four and a half years.

The breakdown of CPU used by our major groups is given below: ScotGrid Group Usage in Year 1

ScotGrid now boasts users from Physical Sciences, Engineering and IBLS faculties. As job submission to the cluster is all done via grid methods, this means that significant user communities in the University are using grid methods for their research.

Grid Futures

Plans are already underway to expand the cluster again next year, with a similar investment as was made last year - so researchers can look forward to an expanding resource.

In addition, with the recent submission of the ScotGrid Proposal to the SFC, grids appear to have a bright future in Scotland. Glasgow researchers will be ideally placed to exploit grid clusters and lead collaborations requiring the next generation of scientific computing.
